Classroom Ideas, Resources, and Lessons‎ > ‎

Primary (K-2)

'Many kids -- struggling readers, reluctant readers, proficient readers, advanced readers, below-basic readers, kids of all kinds -- when they read comics, they fall in love with reading. In time, that love branches out into all types of literature and creates lifelong readership for enjoyment' (Wilson, 2013, p. 65).

Hansen (2012) indicates that graphic novels now share the same stigma and criticism that the new medium of novels did in the 18th century. Yes, novels (which we all know and love) were thought to misinform readers about the values of society. Now graphic novels, manga, and comics are quavering under the same stony glares, but these new mediums can 'help energize students whose interests are hard to capture [and] can aid low-level and nonnative English-speaking readers through the twinning of works with images' (Hansen, 2012, p. 57).
Graphic novels and comics can be especially useful in primary grades. Manga tends to be more suited towards older readers, but if you know of any primary geared manga I would be more than happy to include it here! However, graphic novels and comics (as well as wordless picture books, which may be something of a comic in their own right) allow for early student success with reading which leads to confidence building. Below is a very small selection of resources geared towards the primary grades which gives a very good place for teachers to start and build up their own graphic novel and comic confidence!
